The Akshaya Patra Solution:
In 2000, the Government of India declared that every child in government schools shall receive a meal as part of its plan to address childhood hunger. The enormity of the task, feeding 120 million children, made it impossible for the government to carry out the program alone, so they partnered with Akshaya Patra to implement the Midday Meal program.
For the past 19 years, Akshaya Patra has been a proud partner, addressing classroom hunger with a hot, delicious meal while maintaining the dignity and respect of each child served. The Central and State Governments provide 60% of program costs, while Akshaya Patra covers the remaining costs through fundraising and revenue-generating projects. The midday meal Commissioner in each city evaluates the program, the size of each kitchen and notifies Akshaya Patra of the schools that urgently require the program.
If necessary, we apply for relevant permissions necessary to build a kitchen. The kitchen is built with funding we receive from corporate sponsors, foundations and individuals and sometimes, with the help of the State Government.
Often the only meal a child receives in the day, it serves as an incentive to come to school, addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – blueprints for peace and prosperity.
The three goals include:
Zero Hunger is a Sustainable Development Goal that the UN has identified to bring about a more equitable and sustainable future for all. Our organization directly tackles hunger for the world’s most vulnerable populations. By providing freshly cooked, nutritious meals, we are directly addressing the negative effects of extreme poverty and hunger but also malnutrition.
We also address a second Sustainable Development Goal as we provide a hospitable environment and the resources necessary to help children succeed at school. Our program has been proven to increase the net enrollment ratio, attendance and performance levels of students in primary grades.
Gender Equality is another Sustainable Development Goal we address. Women hired in our kitchens are empowered to become leaders while we remain respectful of culturally appropriate norms. Women come to work at 10:00 am (after sunrise) and leave by 6:30 pm (before sunset) to ensure their safety. Our community development approach ensures that women are able to make their mark in the workforce by providing appropriate terms of employment. We also encourage all our children, regardless of gender, to gain a quality education and improve their nutritional health. We have a 45% female participation rate in our school lunch program.
This solution provides children with a conducive environment to receive a quality education and lift their family out of poverty, within a span of only one generation.
